Some more questions on Plumbing answered by Philip Gibilisco

Plumbing troubles can cost you more than you have planned. From occasional pipe fixtures to those toilet leaks, sewer cleaning to water temperatures, you sure need an expert to help you with all those trivial issues. And the cost can dent your monthly budget. With hands on experience in construction, Philip Gibilisco, helps you with some basic plumbing answers.

How to save on the bills by using the right fixtures?
Philip suggests that probably the best way is to reduce consumption of many of these fixtures you have. For more practical tips, one should use low flow shower heads, and then only start the dishwasher when its full and fix leaks instantly.

What are the easy ways to keep your drains from stinking?
Drains are meant to keep the smell from entering your house, which is why if your bathroom stinks, there is something wrong. The most common reason, Philip Gibilisco says, is dried trap. If you look at your drains, they have a water-holding trap for a small amount to block those gasses from coming up. So the smell comes up if this trap is dry. The simplest way to fix this is to pour water down the drains occasionally, which are less used. If the problem still persists, it might be time to call an expert as there the valve or some part may have malfunctioned.

How can you keep the pipes from freezing?
Having worked on home remodeling for years, Philip Gibilisco says that frozen pipes can be secured only if they are well insulated. The pipes freeze if the temperature has been too low for a fair period of time. So you have to avoid that. Water lines that are inside don’t face any such issue. But for outdoor water lines, you need to ensure they are wrapped up in extra insulation. Don’t worry about the cost this will take as it’s a necessity, not a choice.
